Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
