"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated fans have also petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the best groups, they're a close unit. Their music videos often show them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to make music."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Milestone

The group are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness demanded a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

One man ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

But the band will forever be their primary commitment.

"We have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
